I’ve pulled together a few of the Tips that I initially wrote to go on the packaging of the mixes and equipment in my Home Bargains range. I’ll add more as they occur to me – and do let me know if you have any useful ones of your own that we can share here
I use my 12 Cup Muffin Tray even when making smaller cupcakes - it keeps them more upright and a neater shape for icing.
To make pancakes in batches with my Batter Mix, keep warm in the oven stacked between circles of baking paper to stop them sticking together.
For fun at a children’s party, let them assemble their own pizzas: make some pizza bases ready and smear with ready-made tomato pizza sauce. Put out lots of different toppings in little bowls: sliced tomato, grated cheese, slices of chorizo, tuna, sliced sweet peppers, mushrooms etc - and let the children choose and add their own toppings. Drizzle with a little olive oil and bake as usual.
Use my Pizza Base Mix for rolling dough balls instead of a pizza base and serve them with garlic butter for a delicious snack.
To decorate mince pies, try kneading a little green food colour into pastry mix and cutting out holly leaves. Stick them on top of the pies before cooking, then sprinkle with a little edible glitter before serving.
A quick effective decoration for cakes or cupcakes is to use sprinkles and a stencil - maybe a heart or simple flower. Position the stencil on top of the icing, brush the icing with a tiny amount of water then sprinkle well. Press lightly with your hand to make sure the sprinkles are fixed, then remove the stencil and gently shake off the excess.
